PC Kieren Baker took a team from Thames Valley Police with him to climb a mountain, Pen Y Fan, on 16th October 2014. Earlier this year PC Baker along with many friends took part in the Bayer 10k race. Near to the finish line one of his friends collapsed suffering a cardiac arrest. PC Baker stepped in and performed Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). Luckily there was an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) on a nearby first aid station, which was used to restore the heart of the casualty into rhythm.
Heartstart Thatcham had previously been in the media with regards to introducing AED’s onto their FREE Emergency Life Support courses and also for starting a new scheme to attempt to place more public access defibrillators.
The AED Scheme currently have permission to place up to five AEDs in Thatcham and are finalising permission for devices to be placed in Newbury, Cold Ash and beyond. The funds from this climb will be used to fund an AED for Newbury. Dr Nick Young, Scheme Coordinator for Heartstart Thatcham, sees this as a scheme which will grow with more devices continually being added. We are happy to hear from anyone who may be able to help.
